Van Staal is a renowned manufacturer of some of the best surf fishing tackle in the world. The following is my personal opinion of the Van Staal reel product line.
This reel is an obsessive compulsive’s dream; great design and extreme attention to detail. The reel is available in three differing finishes, black, silver and gold. The reel finish is smooth and impeccable. The rotor cup is machined aluminum with diagonal lightening holes, and so is the spool. The reel features an anti – reverse crank. There is minimal tendency of the rotor cup to back-up, making the anti-reverse positive and precise. This reel is bail-less, and possesses a high quality roller guide. A reel with a bail is also available as a special order. The spool fits perfectly to the rotor shaft. The drag is sealed and contains bearings to make its adjustment very precise. The drag-knob is situated on the front of the spool and won’t get caught in your line.
This reel is a surf caster’s delight. I feel like a smooth operator using the VS. The retrieve is effortless and smooth. The bail-less reel was a little foreign for me to operate, but grew on me quickly. The lack of bail provides lack of problems, like lack of losing my beloved Murph The Surf Classic Striper Lures. The gears move smoothly under pressure and while fighting those aquatic beasts, and reeling in is effortless and serene.
